Yoga, Sanskrit for ‘yoking’ or ‘union’, is an ancient Indian practice for the purpose of uniting the mind, body and spirit.
Through the use of a series of poses or postures, each of which has specific physical benefits, the body becomes flexible and strong, allowing a free flow of life energy and clarity of mind.
Poses can be done quickly in succession, creating heat in the body through movement (vinyasa) or more slowly to increase stamina and perfect the alignment of the body (hatha).
In addition to poses, yoga focuses on breathing techniques (pranayama), chanting and meditation.
By physically performing guided poses in concentrated succession, yoga releases pain, blockages and illness in the body. One is better able to connect with their spiritual selves and therefore lead a stress free life.
